This week I’m in Trinity, TX for the 2013 Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship (The Spirit for short) at Whispering Pines Golf Club. Seeing as this is my very first time formally covering a prestigious golf event, I wanted to make sure that I did my part on a personal level to spread the word. Specifically, I’m managing the tournament’s social media arm, so keep that in mind as I tell you about this awesome event.
The Spirit, which was first played in 2001, is a biannual amateur tournament where 20 national teams each comprised of 2 men and 2 women compete in individual and best ball style plays. Each player has an impressive amateur record; most players have won major tournaments in their respective countries. Many of these players go on to have successful professional careers. In fact, top tier golfers like Charl Schwartzel, Brandt Snedeker, Jason Day, Paula Creamer, Lorena Ochoa, and Lexi Thompson have all competed at the Spirit.
The tournament takes place at Whispering Pines Golf Club in a small town called Trinity, which is about 2 hours north of Houston. The course, built along side Lake Livingston, is incredibly beautiful and offers an unforgettable golfing experience. Unfortunately I won’t be able to squeeze in a round this time, but perhaps one day I’ll get to play.
The company I work for, imavex, handles the digital marketing of the event. A few of my coworkers are in Trinity with me running the live webcast of the tournament. This webcast, which is free to everyone and can be watch here (Spirit Webcast), is the main focus of our efforts. My role is to leverage social media to encourage people to tune in and to keep fans updated on the latest from Whispering Pines.
Personally, I’m thrilled to be a part of such a unique event and I hope that this project will continue to thrive. If you had told me when I was in college that I would be flying to different parts of the country to cover golf events, I’d think you were crazy. But, here I am, just a few years later, serving as a social media director for a major amateur golf tournament featuring future superstars from all over the world. Needless to say, I’m blessed to have such a cool opportunity.
I invite you to tune into the live webcast of the 2013 Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship.
